This was inspired by a basket I saw on pinterest, but I did change a few features when I reverse engineered the design. I made the basket out of scrap plywood and a round rod I had lying around. For the netting I used hemp string.
(Look at pictures below for context) I created a square hole to fit in the lengthwise supports, and filed down the lengths to fit snugly in the hole. This way, I didn't need to really use glue or screws, which I really like. The square hole was done with a small chisel. I'm still refining chisel skills. With plywood, you need to go in from both sides of the wood so you don't blow out the surface, which I did on one of the sides, making it a bit less neat.
Alternatively, I could have just cut out the corners of the side padels and glued the lengthwise supports, and that might have been neater, but would necessate screw or glue.
I painting the inside with a red paint I had leftover as a wall sample. Then the netting was crocheted. It took a few attempts to get the size of the holes right, not too big not too small. I could crochet the net around the holes I made in the side padels.
I only made one of these. I don't really need more at the moment, but I like the concept and might refine the design a bit for the next one. I could use a wire mesh instead of hemp, which seems to be more common, and I would probably do a corner join instead of the chiselled holes.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.
Some facts about me:
- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.
- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.
- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.
